Gore Vidal has authored 24 novels, 5 plays, numerous screenplays and short stories, more than 200 essays, and a memoir. To the left is a list of the vast majority of his works. They are arranged in categories; within each category the titles are arranged in order of publication date, earliest to most recent.

Two of Vidal's "narratives of empire" novels, Lincoln and 1876, were the subject of Time and Newsweek cover stories. Vidal's 1993 collection of essays, United States: Essay 1952-1992, won the National Book Award.

Among Vidal's novels, Creation is particularly rich. Only after reading it twice did I begin to appreciate its complexity and economy. For an exuberantly satirical Vidal, read Myra Breckinridge and Live from Golgotha. In my opinion, Lincoln and Creation are Vidal's most accomplished literary works. I also recommend Burr and The City and The Pillar.
