Moon
& Mars
by

So, Bush announced a Moon
and Mars program (a "vision thing," as
his father might have said)--a U.S. moon
base and a U.S. manned mission to Mars. And I've not heard a single
commentator ask, "And this from someone who said 'the
verdict's still out' on whether or not evolution
is true?!"
It's
clear that Bush doesn't give a damn about science (just ask stem
cell researchers, or alternative energy experts), and
bearing in mind that in August 2001 Bush called the disappearing
surplus ''incredibly
positive news'' because it would put Congress in
a ''fiscal straitjacket," we can safely conclude that Bush
hopes that this spacey project will not only distract America from
Iraq and a jobless pseudo-recovery, but further bankrupt the federal
gov't, forcing cuts in programs the rich--his backers--don't need,
like Social Security and Medicare.
This whole Moon and Mars thing ought to be named Project Disingenuous;
it's an idea with its head not in the clouds, but firmly fixed on
the things of Earth...in the most Machiavellian way imaginable.
Clark
& Dean & Union incentives

This
poll shows the race to be 'tween Clark & Dean.
Among nat'l Dems: Dean 21%, Clark 17%, w/ a MoE 4.
So the Dr. and the Gen. are statistically in a deadheat. But the
pollster writes: "In the Red States, those carried by George
W. Bush in the last election, Clark is the favorite of 21%, Dean
is the choice of 15%."
(Note that the % of undecideds has increased.)
Remember, a poll's a snapshot. Things could change hugely between
now and the convention.
When I was home in Iowa for Christmas, a local firefighter told
me the union is offering a gorgeous new union jacketembroidered
and linedfor any member who brings 5 or more people to the
caucus to vote for Kerry. :)

60 Minutes tonight

Bush's former Tres. Sec., Paul O'Neill, is the subject and force
behind a new book. He's interviewed tonight on 60
Minutes about it. In the book he contents not
only that Bush is out of touch, but that the Iraq war was commited
to and planning for it started within
days of Bush being sworn in.
Thus, more evidence that Bush lied about WMD, encouraged a known
falsehood about a Saddam-9/11 connection, and is an aberrantly severe
cynic, dangerous to the Constitution, who will go as far as exploiting
a nation tragedy like 9/11 in order to further an unrelated goal.

This
is well worth the read. Artois' transcripts show the idiocy of pseudo-journalists
Lisa Meyes and Paula Zahn. Dean's chief Trippi calls Zahn on her
bullshit. Sorry to be crass, but as my Uncle Dave said of another
journalist: "Her brains are in her boobs."
Letters

If
you haven't yet, read some of the letters
Michael Moore's gotten from our troops. I doubt they're representative
of majority uniformed opinion. I can't think of a wartime president
who didn't get the military vote.
Anyone out there have numbers on this? E-mail
me. Lincoln got a landslide. WWI vets? FDR did well
with GIs. LBJ? Wonder what % of Desert Storm vets voted for Clinton
once they got back. I suspect not many, actually. (Thank you,
again, Mr. Perot, for getting us Dems out of a tight spot. And while
I'm at it: F*%& you, Ralph Nader, for getting Shrub out of his
tight spot in '00. (Apologies to my many Green friends, but, I'm
a DEMOCRAT.))

Check
out BushLies.net here,
for a list of Iraq lies and here
for a list of 9/11 and tax plan lies. Each lie is presented beside
the truth. The citations are pretty solid and clear. Now, if only
all that could be compressed into a 30 second ad.

Tintin
is 75 tomorrow, and has a Euro
coin to prove it. When American cartoonists were
creating strips with provincial armed heroes, a la Dick Tracy, the
Belgians created a kids' hero who was a world-traveling reporter...with
a cute dog. (Well, Orphan Annie had one of those, too, to be fair.)

Madonna's
own American Life now involves raising money for Wes Clark. Her
endorsement letter is on her
site, too. Dean
is under attack in Iowa, but it may backfire. The fall in the poll
numbers of Lieberman & co. is proportional to the viciousness
of their fratricidal screeds. So far Dean and Clark are playing
relatively nice. I hope that lasts.

Inspired by Harrington's The
Other America, 40 years ago today Pres. Johnson
declared war
on poverty. Today we're the most unequal society
on earth, the U.S. CEO compensation to worker compensation ratio
is the most lopsided on the planet.

this site?

BECAUSE the wealthiest
1% of Americans own more wealth than the bottom 95% combined;
BECAUSE the president threw
away a $237 billion government surplus, leaving America
no emergency funds;
BECAUSE his imprudence has given us a $400 billion deficit;
BECAUSE he feeds wealth disparity
with tax give-aways
that help the rich, force service cuts
for the rest of us, and drive state and community taxes
up;
BECAUSE on January
28, 2003 the president lied
to America before Congress assembled;
BECAUSE he exploited
the 9/11 tragedy to start an unrelated war, and deceived
Americans to gain their support.
BECAUSE his war is diverting
money and immeasurable resources from the fight against terrorism;
BECAUSE his warmongering showed contempt for our allies and squandered
their goodwill;
BECAUSE he protects officials
who treasonously betrayed
an American spy;
BECAUSE he and his staff censor
information
and withhold
from the American public even basic facts about their secret
governance;
BECAUSE his environmental
record is the worst of any president in American history.
BECAUSE savvy
conservatives overwhelmed
our insipid and lazy media (while Democratic Party leaders sat idly
by) with well-funded
think tank data,
right-wing commentary, and partisan spin;
BECAUSE the grassroots campaigns of Howard
Dean and Wesley
Clark offer the hope of a resurgent
Democratic Party;
BECAUSE Democrats are finally recognizing
the need for better political communication;
BECAUSE grassroots organizations like MoveOn.org
show that the Internet can help defend the republic and its constitution;
that's why this site.
