Majette and Oxford face-off in Dem run-off election for nomination
by IseFire - Wed 07/21/04; 8:00 am EST

First-term Congressmember Denise Majette and businessman Cliff Oxford, recruited as a candidate by Jimmy Carter, came out on top of Georgia's Democratic primary last night, but neither got more than 50% of the votes, which is required to for the nomination. A run-off election comes in three weeks. You can give to Majette through Operation: Southern Preservation. If she wins she'll be the first black Senate nominee in Georgia's history.

This primary is important. Whoever wins takes on the Republican for a seat that opened up in the wake of Democrat Zell Miller's retirement.

Bush makes yet another outlandish claim
by IseFire - Tue 07/20/04; 8:43 pm EST

G. W. Bush today declared in Iowa that that if he's re-elected it would ensure the safety of the U.S.

That's classic Bush: an untruth stated with conviction. Some would say it's a bald-faced lie. Maybe. However, it's possible Bush actually believes what he's saying. Nonetheless, the statement's still untrue insofar as truth is defined as a proposition supported by the facts.

Here are the facts:

*The State Department's own report shows that terrorism has increased sharply worldwide since the U.S. invaded Iraq.

*Bush has so over-stretched our military that we are pulling troops away from our nuclear enemy, North Korea and can't use them adequately to fight al-Qaeda or find bin Laden.

*The International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) concluded that the invasion of Iraq has resulted in an al-Qaeda recruiting boon.

*Bush's foreign policies include warm relations with anti-democratic and corrupt nations.

*Bush has slashed funding for anti-chemical weapons projects and even cut FBI funding after 9/11.

*Bush is devastating morale among our troops because of the way he has mistreated them, used them, and slashed veterans' benefits, and soldiers' imminent-danger pay and family-separation allowance.

*Bush's amateurish foreign diplomacy has distanced us from our allies just when we need them to help us fight a global terrorist network.

And on this record Bush will run on the claim that he'll make us safer?

Puritanical absurdity as Mrs. Slocombe's pussy could be drowned by censors
by IseFire - Tue 07/20/04; 7:52 pm EST

The British tabloid The Sun reports:

US TV bosses have banned Mrs Slocombe’s pussy — as too shocking for Americans. The British sitcom Are You Being Served? faces being toned down or even axed because of the double entendre jokes.

Retirement of Rep. Jim Greenwood (R-PA) means Dems might pick up a House seat
by IseFire - Tue 07/20/04; 7:42 pm EST

The Hill reports that pro-choice Republican Congressman Jim Greenwood is likely to retire.

“This is a very good opportunity for a Democratic pickup. This a district that is every day becoming Democratic,” said Greg Speed, spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

ATF inspects few licensed dealers
by IseFire - Tue 07/20/04; 7:40 am EST

This from the AP:

Only about 4.5 percent of the nation's federally licensed gun dealers are checked each year to ensure they comply with firearms laws, far below the goals set by the agency that does the exams, the Justice Department said Monday.

Kopel rockets 59 charges against Moore's 9/11...but some miss the mark
by IseFire - Sun 07/18/04; 8:43 pm EST

Aircraft can be taken down by anti-aircraft missiles. Metaphorically, Dave Kopel shot 59 of them at Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, still airborne and carpet bombing the George W. Bush record of mis-leadership.

But, there are also missiles designed to take down anti-aircraft missiles, called anti-anti-aircraft missiles, 49 of which Anton Sirius has launched into the blogosphere, and more of which Moore himself has fired. So...if Kopel responds to those...? Anti-anti-anti-aircraft missiles?

Like or loathe Moore's film, there's no denying that it's generated a lot of debate, and that's almost certainly helping the American peoples' reawakening political awareness, which as November 2nd approaches will continue to grow...until Janet shows another boob, or Ben Affleck comes out of the closet, or some housewife gives birth to quintuplets, or some other asininity.

It's telling that this back and forth about the movie is almost entirely on the Internet and not within the mainstream print and TV media.

(And, in case you were wondering, the military confusingly doesn't abbreviate "anti-anti-aircraft missiles" as AAAMs. AAAM stands for Advanced Air-to-Air Missile. There's a quiz later.)

Majority of Americans say US should have stayed out of Iraq
by IseFire - Sun 07/18/04; 8:43 am EST

From the Associated Press:

The CBS-New York Times poll, released Friday, found that just over half, 51 percent, said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq, while 45 percent said going to war was the right decision. Last month, people were evenly split on that question.

Senate voting on Bush judge on Tuesday
by IseFire - Sat 07/17/04; 5:13 pm EST

The Associated Press reports that Tuesday the Senate will vote on whether to consider Bush's nomination of Idaho lawyer William G. Myers III to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Myers represented mining and cattle interests before becoming the Interior Department's solicitor in 2001. Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement this week:

William Myers epitomizes the anti-environmental tilt of so many Bush nominees. He should not be confirmed, and my hope is that he will not be confirmed.

Outing.... Finally!
by IseFire - Thu 07/15/04; 11:17 pm EST

Michelangelo Signorile helped popularize the concept and practice of "outing," a term coined by Time in 1990. He was chastised for exposing the hypocrisy of politicians and public figures who were gay, in the closet, and actively working against the expansion of civil right to gay Americans.

But he was a pioneer, and outing may be coming back with a vengeance, though its resurrection is belated indeed. A guy named Michael Rogers has launched this blog in order to out gay staffers of legislators who support the Hate Amendment that was defeated in the Senate this week.

DeLay's deceits unraveling
by IseFire - Thu 07/15/04; 10:55 pm EST

Tom DeLay is perhaps the most cynical operator ever to deceive his way to the top. But, his unethically fund-raising and bribes are starting to come to light. He personifies unethical, and represents the worst of the sort of brutal manipulator that gives politicians the bad bad name they too often deserve.

Reported today by the AP:

Four of the five House ethics committee Republicans investigating Majority Leader Tom DeLay have accepted money in the past from the fundraising operation involved in the complaint against him.
