This
is not democracy in action

I didn't appreciate the possible significance of this
story on CNN about government secrecy , but an attorney
I know summarized the implications this way:
"In
the 1990's, laws were passed that permitted the INS to engage in
secret proceedings against illegal immigrants who had been detained
pending deportation. The notion was that as illegal immigrants,
they were in the US illegally and therefor not entitled to constitutional
protections, including knowing what charges against them were, confronting
witnesses, jury trial, etc. Now it seems that those constitutional
rights are no longer intended to apply to US citizens. Even spies
in time of war were allowed to mount a defense and confront the
evidence against them. I have not done any extensive legal research,
but this is the first regulation that I have ever heard that US
civilians could be charged with a crime without knowing what the
charge is, mounting a defense, or confronting accusers. (Of course,
since the regulation and the penalties for breaking it are secret,
it's hard to know how far it goes.) Does this sound like democracy
in action to you?"

Here
it is.
The
cops standing on the streets during the RNC convention were supposed
to be the thugs, or so said the radical left. But they weren't.
They mostly practiced restraint. The radical left were supposed
to be the thugs, destroying property and being out-of-control. But
they didn't go on a rampage; they practiced restraint.
GOP
ad strategy: bash Dems with Sharpton and "homosexual agenda"

From Doug
Ireland:
Mel
Martinez, the Cuban-American Bush HUD Secretary who was hand-picked
by Rove to run for Florida's open U.S. Senate seat, just this
week won his primary nomination against McCollum by running ads
portraying him as a prisoner of the "radical homoxual lobby"
because... he favored including gays in hate crime legislation.
Political homophobia of this sort is now turning up in races all
over the country.
Regulation
changed after Dem convention allows active military to attend conventions

In one of the most horrific debasements of the principle
of a non-partisan military, a concept vital to the survival of our
republic, Dept. of Defense directive 1344.10,
which prohibits active military personnel from taking part in several
kinds of partisan activities, was modified by Paul Wolfowitz to
allow military personnel to attend
political conventions. When did the regulation to
take effect? August 2nd, after the Democratic National Convention.

Visit Operation
Truth. It's very interesting to encounter the first-hand
experience of soldiers in Iraq. Those soldiers still there are sorely
in need, as are their families at home, and many of them believe
that a draft, while not necessarily a likelihood, has become a very
viable contingency. (Here's a very recent article
co-authored by OT's founder, 1st
Lt. Paul Rieckhoff.)
Kerry
bitch-slaps Bush-Cheney

The Real Deal's fighting
back against The Raw Deal. Kerry last night:
The
Vice President even called me unfit for office last night. I guess
I'll leave it up to the voters whether five deferments makes someone
more qualified to defend this nation than two tours of duty.
.....
Let
me tell you what I think makes someone unfit for duty. Misleading
our nation into war in Iraq makes you unfit to lead this nation.
Doing nothing while this nation loses millions of jobs makes you
unfit to lead this nation. Letting 45 million Americans go without
healthcare makes you unfit to lead this nation. Letting the Saudi
Royal Family control our energy costs makes you unfit to lead
this nation. Handing out billions of government contracts to Halliburton
while you're still on their payroll makes you unfit. That's the
record of George Bush and Dick Cheney. And it's not going to change.
I believe it's time to move America in a new direction; I believe
it's time to set a new course for America.

Compassionate capitalism! Also known as plain ol' capitalism. I'd
like an order of that, please, with fries and a chocolate shake.
Hold the conservatism. It's bad for business.
